新．．．あんたはね．．．

LOLs...I really should have read the chapters properly earlier.

I was really puzzled about Arata before, but now, I do have to confirm that he really is just like Chihaya in many ways, but especially in the "karuta idiot" way.

Going back to the end of volume 11, where he told Chihaya that he was only coming to the individual tournament because he was not interested in the team tournament...

In chapter 64, he then notes that "that was a lie", as he rocks up at Omi Jingu to watch the team competition, though clearly with the intent of keeping it from Taichi and Chihaya at least until the end of the day...

True, he screwed that up majorly in terms of his original goal for being there...but seriously, Arata, do you have to be so cute!?!

p.s. though I expect you won't lie to Chihaya like that again, given that you saw how much it hurt her to think you weren't interested in team competition!

Chihayafuru chapter 93: the tanka

Quick translations of the two tanka that Chihaya writes whilst in the hospital. They're not going to be as poetic as they sound in Japanese (although they're pretty simple compared to the Hyakunin Isshu anyway), but hopefully they'll get the meaning across.

#6
In the room where the heat of summer does not penetrate, I feel the happiness of your words that have.

#7
If I turn this corner, will I bump into you? Whether it's a miracle or a dream, that's what I'm waiting for.

Chihayafuru speculation

Hm...someone who's read the most recent chapter (#93) - a chapter where Taichi wins seven straight matches at a camp with Fujisaki HS, and where Chihaya realises that she doesn't really understand Taichi either - alluded to a possibility that I'm not entirely sure I want to see.

Remember: the very first scene of the manga has Chihaya playing in the Queen match in her final year of high school - that's one and a half years from now.

That means, we have one more Meijin / Queen challenge match before Chihaya qualifies as the challenger.

Given Arata's recent showing, it's quite possible he gets there...and defeats Suo...(although I'm not sure I'd want to see that! It'd be too quick!)

And if that's the case...Taichi might be the challenger the year after, whilst Chihaya challenges Shinobu...

The potential drama if that were to happen...waaaaaaaaaah.........

edit: urgh...after reading through the 2ch spoiler thread, I'm a little bit peeved at Kana-chan and Taichi, conspiring so that only Taichi and Chihaya go to the learning camp with Fujisaki. なんかずるいよ。Personally, I think he should just confess, and confess in a way that respects Chihaya's own feelings. Yes, it's completely unfair because she's never even looked at him even though he's always been there - it's hard to say if she even truly appreciates what he's done for her. But I personally have more respect for people who think about the happiness of the one they love rather than just about their own happiness, even if they themselves are in pain because of that. That's how I want to live too.

Ah well, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now - maybe he wants to use this camp to confess, but will let Chihaya mull over it rather than pushing his feelings on her. It all depends on what you do next, Taichi!

Chihayafuru crack from 2ch

Well, it's not quite as crazy as things can get, but it's still amusing.

The most recent chapter of Chihayafuru, the 92nd poem, has set off some fireworks everywhere. But what really amuses me about the reaction is how loads of people are now trying to describe the characters in terms of other series. This shouldn't really spoil anything, but I'll leave it under the cut just in case:

E.g.
Chihaya = Hikaru; Arata = Sai; Taichi = Akari
Chihaya = Hikaru; Arata = Akira; Taichi = Akari
Chihaya = Hikaru; Arata = Akira; Taichi = Isumi

It's mostly been compared with HikaGo...but my favourite was actually this Hachikuro one:

Chihaya = Hagu
Arata = Morita-sempai
Taichi = Takemoto
Harada-sensei = Harada Shuu-chan!

p.s. Suetsugu-sensei is pretty much confirmed as a complete sadist, btw...

"You must throw it away, the illusion that a story must have a beginning and an end."

Carol, release yourself from that illusion. You must throw it away, the illusion that a story must have a beginning and an end. Stories have no beginning, nor do they have an end. All they have are people connecting with each other, working with each other, affecting each other, and how that expands throughout the world. Stories must never have an end.

But Vice-director, why can't stories have an end?

Why do you think?

Hm...because leaving the possibility of a continuation is a more effective hook?

3 points.

...that's a bit low, don't you think?

There are a multitude of ways to answer that question. But for your sake, I'll just tell you the simplest one.

Yes please.

Because it's fun.

Because it's fun?

Yes, because it's fun.

But aren't there people who are dissatisfied when a story doesn't have an end?

That in itself is something to look forward to, Carol.

...

Take that mouse. How do you think it's lived up to this point? And what kinds of experiences is it going to pass through from here on? Try and imagine it, Carol, imagine.

Vice-director, you're right, this is fun!

That's what it's all about, Carol.

From the 16th episode of Baccano!

Haha. This is so perfect when talking about Macross endings! And yes, I do know that they might just be talking about the stories of the Immortals, but the meta- potential is too great to just confine it to Narita-sensei's world!

The full scene in Japanese under the cut...

「imagine」

副社長、私、楽しくなってきました！

そういうことだよ、キャロル。

Bakemonogatari news...!!!

So, it's finally licensed for some kind of release in the West. They haven't announced what form the release will be in yet (i.e. digital, or with DVDs/BDs), but it will apparently premiere today at Sakura-Con in the States, so we just might find out within 24 hours or so...

I wonder how they're doing it. This is such a dialogue heavy anime that quite a few fans seem to be hoping for a good dub. Well, not that this is of any concern to me...

And of course, the other big question on everyone's lips (if we get the DVD/BD release): what are they going to do about the commentaries?

(from ANN)

p.s. Something that's bugging me though...the first volume of the "Bakemonogatari Commentary Scriptbook" was briefly available for preorder on amazon...but has since disappeared. That doesn't mean they'll be cancelling that, does it? Or that it'll only be available from certain sellers? I couldn't find it on BK1 either...

Nise 10: let me be incredibly superficial, so that I can agree with Shinobu...

...that Mister Donut's old-fashioned donuts are incredibly delicious!

Nise is...Nise. I've long known that this is arguably the most poorly written section of the series, particularly the 2nd volume. Doesn't mean I'm not going to read it when I finally have the time, or that I'm going to cancel my pre-orders of the BDs - I'm far more interested in the commentaries, after all.

But chances of me raving about Nise like I raved about Bake? Next to nil.

Guilty Crown: Gai's motive...

...is actually incredibly simple, if I'm reading his character arc right. Last episode (#19), he told Shibungi that he'd only ever had one goal, right from the start.

But what exactly is that goal?

Well, he told Kuhoin (and thus, us) in episode 10...

I have the feeling that there'll be some interesting reactions when people realise (remember) what it is - let's just say I'm expecting a lot of wild laughter...

And this in English: was Shuu just taking all of their voids? As in, that's what his void enables him to do - take them and carry them with him? Woah...

I know, this isn't quite the best icon, but it's the only one I have that's appropriate in the 'correct' way for this!

Guess who got the Seiyuu Awards Overseas Fans Choice Award this year?

I guess it'll be interesting to see what the reaction amongst the Japanese fan and industry communities is, because it'll be an indicator whether Sakku might eventually be awarded some of the other awards. To be honest, I think he should get supporting for his roles in 「C」 and AnoHana this year, but I'm not holding my breath. Anyways, half a week until the rest of the awards are announced!

Brief notes on Guilty Crown as of #18

Spoilers, of course

Shuu & Inori

hm...I'm glad they didn't depict Inori giving him first aid...let's just say it would have killed my ears.

I'd been wondering when they'd bring the 'so why is your void a sword?' issue up again...the reason that floated to my mind was that she'd been created as a weapon.

The way Shuu dealt with the question though (as revealed in the flashback), shows character that I really respect.

as does the look in Shuu's eyes at the end. Well, it seems like he's finally matured to the point where, when he doesn't have the power to do what he wants, he knows that there are still things that can be done.

Gai

that's not Gai. At least, I really don't believe it is. I sincerely hope the writers have written this well.

On the other hand, remembering back to the 4th episode where he said that Kido Kenji was the main target of the planned rescue...

Haruka

Here's a brief rundown of how I believe her decision on how to 'set Shuu free' came about.

when she met Gai and Inori in #11, Gai noted that he'd left Shuu behind, which meant that he should have been safely far away from all the action.

however, because Shuu still had the Void Genome, he decided to get himself involved (NB: there is also an interesting comment from Gai in that episode, which is rather vague, but which implies how much he actually cares for Shuu. I have the sinking feeling that most subbers didn't get it right.)

hence, Haruka thought that the only way to truly free him from the whole situation was to get the Void Genome out of him. Of course, given what Shu has gone through up 'til now...

Daryl

ok, this development has been coming for ages...but seriously, after the few times he went batshit crazy in the first half of the series...?

Finally, I skimmed some of the earlier episodes again, and when I came across 'Infection Control Law Article 9' in ep.13 again, my eyebrows went right up. Of course, the controversial Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution doesn't have a 3rd section, but I'm still wondering if that was intentional...Yoshino used to be a schoolteacher, so there's no way he doesn't know the significance of that particular article...

Radio Misty Special - キュンとした！！！

...as much as I could anyway, seeing as I don't particularly like either of their voices...

...but seeing Shimono Hiro be totally at home in a kitchen, even as he's baking something, when baking is the one type of cooking that he was deathly afraid of trying!

Yes, guys who can cook...totally キュンとするわ！

The rest of the special was pretty funny too, right from Hirotan having to change into that maid costume...Yuutan and Hirotan sweet-talking each other (yes, with Hirotan still in that get-up, and even letting Yuutan lay his head on his lap...), all the way to the end of the cook-up, where Yuutan prepared a peppery present as 'thanks!' for the director, who'd been grinning at them from the other side of the camera all through the shoot!

Waaah~ I really haven't laughed this much in ages!

Am I weird?

I'm really enjoying Nisemonogatari...to the extent that I 'ignore' most of what many viewers are calling "fanservice".

E.g. the bathroom scene in episode 4, where Shinobu, in her 8-year-old form, is portrayed washing herself (and having her hair washed by Araragi) for a good 10 minutes. Or the scene in episode 2 where he walks in on Kanbaru in her 'despairing state'.

There are definitely a few moments - Nadeko and one particular perspective of Karen's conversation with her brother in episode 2, along with Karen suffering under the fever in episode 4...but I've seen a lot of complaints about the bathroom scene in particular, and I'm simply not fussed about that.

Is it because I'm a girl myself? Especially since I've been to public baths (銭湯) in Japan where people partake in that whole cleansing routine? (I haven't been to a mixed bath / hot spring, but I know they exist) Is it because I'm just used to the idea that, even where the baths are split by sex, children can enter with a parent of the opposite sex? Apparently, it's considered quite socially acceptable as long as the child has not entered puberty.

Yes, I know that Shinobu technically isn't Araragi's child. But if you really think about it, their relationship is something like master-servant cum family...

Basically, I really don't get a lot of the whining about all the fanservice (and, of course, am even less impressed by the whining that a certain kiss wasn't animated - big deal, that particular scene wasn't in the novel either, just the dialogue leading up to it). It was expected, especially with Nadeko, but in my opinion, episode 10 of Bakemonogatari still takes the cake.

p.s. Another fun fact: apparently, it's the father that 'traditionally' bathes the children (usually at home) until they are old enough to wash themselves thoroughly...

キュンとする仕草

This is super old, but I've always wanted to write about it.

A few years ago, back when I was still teaching in Okinawa, I went on a little school excursion with my 3rd years. This being Senior High School, that means 17- and 18-year-olds. Although I hadn't been their 'sub-' homeroom teacher for more than a year, I still went with my favourite class.

It being a rather long bus ride, the class leaders, of course, came up with some games and activities to while away the time. One of these involved relaying the results of a little survey that they'd had the all the students fill out previously. It had some of the usual - i.e. what people want to be / see themselves as in the future.

But the one that interested - or rather, amused - me most, was the 「キュンとする仕草」 one, i.e. "(behavioural) idiosyncrasies that make your heart skip a beat". They generally gave the rather typical ones of 'twirling a pen around their fingers', or 'playing with their hair', but what was really amusing was how the MC would sometimes name the student(s) who displayed that behaviour, resulting in a few red faces.

But this doesn't just happen at the local level - it's also showed up in at least one of the Waratte Ii Tomo drama specials that Tamori and SMAP's Nakai Masahiro host, in a segment which had female contestants ranking what the men identified as their favourite idiosyncrasies in women. There were some that people generally agree on (e.g. holding a hair tie lightly between one's teeth whilst gathering one's hair up into a ponytail), and others that raised a few eyebrows ('a girl who is somewhat airheaded at work'...) and even Kimura Takuya's 'being able to nonchalantly act demurely even when wearing clothing that is a little bit revealing'! The latter one included 'nonchalantly returning a shoulder strap to its proper place', 'nonchalantly covering one's cleavage when leaning forward to get something', and slipping in and out of a car with legs together when wearing a miniskirt. It was pretty funny watching him get a bit of flak for that!

As for my favourite idiosyncracies in guys...well...er...I quite like Yuukyan's sheepish hand-to-head gesture when HiroC had cornered him with a question about choosing between Sheryl and Ranka at the Tokyo Zepp live...

Ultimately, however, it's voices that make my heart skip...and as I noted in my 2011 review, Ryuu's "Chizuru, suki da yo..." tops just about everything I've had the pleasure of listening to...

...I can't believe the kinds of things that turn up on Japanese radio...

I've been half-listening to some of the radio shows I collected so indiscriminately half a decade ago...and have found myself wondering what - if any - restrictions they have on these kinds of programs in Japan.

This time, the show in question is Sweet Junction, with Sugita Tomokazu, Morikubo Shoutatou and Morita Masakazu. I hardly pay attention because none of these seiyuu feature amongst my favourites, but there are a couple of corners that through up some funny, or *facepalm* worthy conversations.

One is the corner where fans write in with the reports of a study, e.g. "When asked if they would give up sex for 1 million pounds, 30% of English men answered 'yes'", to which the three determine whether they think the report - of the existence of a survey with those results - is true or not. By-the-by, this one turned out to be true...

But more mind-blowing for me was another corner, about 'Superhumans'...wherein one reader wrote in to propose that a classmate who never...er...jerks himself off...should be considered worth of such that title...

Brief notes about the AnoHana commentaries...

So, continuing with my commentary binge, I sat down to listen to all the AnoHana ones.

I didn't really take any notes, because a lot of it seemed to be about nostalgic reminders of the commentators' own childhoods. They talked about games, about whether they built their own 'secret bases', about how children behave at that age (generally agreeing with how the characters were written). Half of the time, they talked about things that would appeal more to Japanese viewers who might have grown up around the same time.

But there were other little things about the anime world that came up, particularly with regards to the seiyuu. For example, the 'Nokemon' and various other little snippets were ad-libbed, as was Yukiatsu's 'Nice middle!' in episode 9 (Tamura and Seto talk about how difficult it was for them to smother their laughter - it was quite a serious scene, after all!). The other thing the seemed to come through, from various seiyuu (incl. Irino and Seto) is that a lot of the younger seiyuu really look up to Sakku and admire his work.

Finally, they also talk about the developments and characters of AnoHana itself. About Jintan's interesting shirts, Yukiatsu's strong but unrequited love, Tsuruko as a 'cool beauty', how Menma's personality hasn't changed although she has grown slightly, Anaru's horrendous nickname and her awkwardness, how Poppo has changed the most and how they all wondered just how he was connected to the accident. We also got some comments from creative team, including Okada's comment about a scene in #10 that she had thought was rather touching when she wrote it, but which turned out to be quite...icky when it was finally animated. See if you can guess which one it was...

And that's the AnoHana commentary. Some of it was really interesting - especially the ones involving people who weren't from the main cast, but also the ones with Sakku. And I'm not saying that just because he's my favourite seiyuu - they really were quite entertaining.

Anyways, that's probably it for AnoHana from me. For anyone who's interested, here's the list of commentators.

#01 - Irino Miyu, Kayano Ai, Tomatsu Haruka
#02 - Irino Miyu, Tomatsu Haruka, Kondo Takayuki
#03 - Irino Miyu, Kayano Ai, Kondo Takayuki
#04 - Kayano Ai, Sakurai Takahiro, Hayami Saori
#05 - Irino Miyu, Tomatsu Haruka, Sakurai Takahiro
#06 - Irino Miyu, Hayami Saori, Kondo Takayuki
#07 - Kayano Ai, Tomatsu Haruka, Sakurai Takahiro
#08 - Kayano Ai, Ogata Mitsuru, Oura Fuyuka
#09 - Kayano Ai, Tamura Mutsumi, Seto Asami
#10,11 - Irino Miyu, Nagai Tatsuyuki (director), Okada Mari (screenplay), Tanaka Masayoshi (character design)

Once again, Happy New Year!!, and the year ender

Hm...I was possibly even worse this year, partly because of the amount of work I'd been doing...I did 180 hours over a four week period! So in the end, I sent just one new year's card to Japan. Although I did email around 12 people (actually emailed more, but what do you know, a lot of my students had changed their email addresses - new boyfriends I'm guessing (^_^;;) ). Need to reply to some of them again - maybe when I get back home later today.

Anyways, here's my look back at 2011 in anime.

In memory of 2011 part 1: 'I love you'
In memory of 2011 part 2: Rin-chan: too cute for words!
In memory of 2011 part 3: Secret base ~that which you gave me~
In memory of 2011 part 4: Kuroneko FTW!!
In memory of 2011 part 5: CLANNAD and Kyoani as the pinnacle of character animation
In memory of 2011 part 6: buried in translation
In memory of 2011 part 7: 'The Darkest Night'
In memory of 2011 part 8: Satou - still a loser, but cool nonetheless
In memory of 2011 part 9: the big ones I missed
In memory of 2011 part 10: 「UN-GO」 and Ango - the nature of 'truth'
In memory of 2011 part 11: of trolls, disagreements, and interesting discussions
In memory of 2011 part 12: Macross Frontier: the Wings of Farewell

Appendix: the list.

Tidbits from the Clannad AS commentaries, part 2

Ishihara Tatsuya (Series Director)
Takeda Akiyo (Colour Design)
Akitake (Animation Director)

#16

They talk about the difference between male and female 'colour designers'. The former are more likely to leave it to the animators to decide the colours, but the latter usually assign colours - it's like they have a vision of what they want to see.

#17

When Ushio gets up to go the the toilet, she puts her hand on Tomoya's knee to help herself up - Takeda found that really really cute, like "really moe!"
And Tomoya's watch - it's a man's watch now, rather than the one he had in high school.

#18

Poor Takeda-san! This episode had not 2, not 3, but 4!! different sunset colour schemes!
Ishihara also mentions that he brought in a video of his niece as a reference for the animators. How they move include actions that might not register unless you're actually trying to observe them, such as saying 'no' with their whole body, shaking it from left to right.

Sakamoto Kazuya (Ep 19 director)
Ishidate Taiichi (Ep 20 director)
Horiguchi Yukiko (Ep 21 animation director)

#19

Strangely, the women amongst the production crew apparently didn't really understand the scene between Tomoya and his father. On the surface, you really think he is a bad father, but when you try to understand the emotions behind his actions, there's something beneath that surface.

e.g. 18:50
Why did he stay in the house, even though Tomoya had left? Probably because he was waiting for Tomoya to come home. Remember when Tomoya left? He didn't say he wasn't coming back, just "I'm going to stay at a friend's place for a while. I don't know when I'll be back." So perhaps Tomoya's father thought that he couldn't just leave. Until now, he really was still living as a father. And then at the end of the episode, he changed from using "Tomoya-kun" to using just "Tomoya".

#20

The person who drew the key frames around this point (Fuko's visit) is really amazing - a female animator who is known as an "angel" amongst her peers(?) - she does really amazing work. They don't name her...(which had me wondering for a while if she was 'Nishiya', but I'm guessing not...)

Another animator they talk about is Nishiya Taishi (apparently an 'idol' - Horiguchi emphasises this), who does excellent facial animation. It comes naturally to him, he doesn't plan to make it so cute/moe etc.

Ishidate wondered if they had Tomoya being reminded of Nagisa too much, because he's finally gotten over her death one/two episodes before, so he regrets it a little. However, the other two reassure him that it's pretty natural, especially Sakamoto - "it probably hurt too much until then to think about her, so it's only once he's gotten over her death they the memories come flooding back".

Ishihara Tatsuya
Ikeda Kazumi
Takao Noriko

And once again, for some reason, I didn't take anything down for this...

I just watched rou: Adayume.

Even though I'd figured it all out, that is, the wedding, the jealousy-induced nightmare etc, not to mention where the true feelings of at least one character lay, that last exchange between Watanuki and Doumeki just killed me.

Literally.

Souma Hiroomi - finally showing concern...? Or just amused?

One thing that's completely surprised me since the 8th episode aired on Saturday, is the number of fans that...hm...fawn over Souma's apparent concern for Yamada (Aoi) - he spends most of the episode ensuring that she isn't found by the person that he (and every viewer) is certain is her brother.

These fans allege that he's noticed how Yamada's family environment isn't that great (her mother works too much, perhaps, neglecting them?) so he wants to keep Yamada in the restaurant where she is happier.

Hm...I'm far more inclined to think that Souma just thought it would be amusing to keep them apart...until, as happens with anything involving Yamada, the lutz inadvertently gets turned back on him...
Crap...how many of them am I recognising this season...?

This was me a few weeks ago...

The first episode of Guilty Crown was pretty good...but I'm getting a little bit tired of Kaji Yuuki in these kinds of roles. Can we have more Yumasaki, please...?

Maybe I shouldn't have said that...he's kinda creepy in UN-GO 6!!
